If you stay in lower end accommodation and eat in local restaurants you can live on as little as £3 a day. Typical budget accommodation on the islands is a man made wooden beach hut. These beach huts are very basic and often have nothing more than a hole in the ground for a toilet. If you are prepared to get back to basics you will find these huts very enjoyable and the best part about them is they can cost as little as £1 a night. The local food is fantastic and you can get a full meal of rice or noodles for as little as 50p. Don't be afraid to eat from street vendors, just make sure that any food you eat is cooked fresh and then you shouldn't have too many problems. If you are prepared to look after the pennies and budget on most things you do, it is possible to travel South East Asia literally on a shoestring.
